I am just going to quote the abovementioned article because I know many of you are a wee bit too lazy to click on medical papers (yours truly, the Bimbo, included).
"From the time of entering HIV care, per person projected life expectancy is 24.2 years, discounted lifetime cost is (in USD)$385,200, and undiscounted cost is $618,900 for adults who initiate ART with CD4 cell count < 350/microL. Seventy-three percent of the cost is antiretroviral medications, 13% inpatient care, 9% outpatient care, and 5% other HIV-related medications and laboratory costs.
For patients who initiate ART with CD4 cell count < 200/microL, projected life expectancy is 22.5 years, discounted lifetime cost is $354,100 and undiscounted cost is $567,000. Results are sensitive to drug manufacturers’ discounts, ART efficacy, and use of enfuvirtide for salvage. If costs are discounted to the time of infection, the discounted lifetime cost is $303,100.”
Since I am focusing on HIV/AIDS in Singapore, I will help you do the currency conversion into Singapore Dollars (SGD). The lifetime cost of caring for your self once you have tested positive for HIV (which consists of 73% antiretroviral medications, 13% inpatient care, 9% outpatient care, & 5% other HIV-related medications & lab costs) will be SGD $492,135.
You can buy a 4 room HDB flat in Tanjong Pagar or Commonwealth with that amount of money. Or you can buy 3 Toyota Camrys or 2 Mercedes Benz C300. Think about it. Or you can go on a round the world luxury trip visiting all the awesome, exotic places you can ever dream of! (think Patagonia or Greenland)
Think twice before you decide to bareback. Stay safe.
Question:Hi. This may seem like a stupid question but.. can you get any sexually related diseases when you are the one getting BJ-ed?
My Answer: “Its not a stupid question at all! The risks of getting HIV are very small if you are the one being fellated by your sexual partner, although, from expeience and testimonies, the risk of catching gonorrhea from being sucked is moderate, especially if the person has a penchance for swallowing and the bacteria might be festering in his/her larynx. If you have reason to fear that you might have gotten a Urinary Tract Infection or whatevet, its best to see a doctor at the DSC clinic. In the meanwhile, drink lots of cranberry juice to cleanse your urinary tract.”
Question:Having gone on the show Talking Point, do you think you have reached your goal to educate Singaporeans and remove the stigma associated with ppl living with HIV? What are some constructive steps you think the govt can take to aid you on your mission?
My Answer: “Thank you for tuning into the show. Actually, my mission is far from over, this is perhaps just around twenty baby waddles along the journey of HIV desigmatization in Singapore. I have made the first step by coming forward and creating an awareness amongst the general populace about the pertinent issue of HIV/AIDS at the workplace. There are still many other aspects we have to work on say, HIV/AIDS at home in the family, HIV/AIDS and religion (and there are many, including my own) and HIV/AIDS and society at large.
I hope by my first step by coming out in public (albeit as Shadowboi87), I have made PLHIV who are facing the same hallenges as me to be EMPOWERED and make a stand, as well as to tell themselces that they are very muh capable being productive members of our society. This will happen if PLHIV will stop stigmatizing ourselves and rdfuse to partakr in the going ons of the society. This way, we can achieve the eventual destigmatization of HIV/AIDS as a “gay disease”, “immoral disease” or whatnot.
Baby steps baby steps.
As we all know, we live in a pseudo-nanny state in which the Government loooooves telling us what to do, so honestly, I feel that the Government should spearhead this initiaive to destigmatize HIV/AIDS by shifting away its moral conservatism from a “they deserve HIV” to something along the lines of “PLHIV are our fellow Singaporeans too, let us help each other”
We people living with HIV, all of you have to remember, are human beings too, we are someone’s son, daughter, husband, wife, child, partner, lover. We have feelings too. We are not just a statistic. So please, don’t treat us like lepers. What if it ever happens to you?”
Isnt it hard to find motivation each day to telling yourself that life will get better if i was just a innocent party who got infected ?
Sorry sweetie, I always have this belief that it takes two hands to clap. Unless you can tell me you were drugged. then raped and bred against your will, that would hereby absolve you of any responsibility. What’s done is done, you need to look forward and face a new day. Take this as a lesson learnt and never let this challenge bring you down.
